Islamic Studies (Aliya Mahmood)

We covered the prayer to seek knowledge and following the same topic we covered the Hadith on the importance of seeking knowledge. We discussed how important it is to seek both religious and worldly knowledge. We tried to memorize the prayer and its meaning so repeated it three four times in class. I told them that in next class I hope they will have it memorized inshallah.

Contemporary Studies (Khalid Kark)

Had a very engaging discussion on current events, on responding to people who are saying things about Muslims. Kids brought up Donald Trump and what he said about Muslims, so we discussed how to respond to such instigation, and talked about the teachings of Holy Quran and Holy Prophet. We also talked about how Muslims are only 1% of the US  populations and it is our responsibility to follow the true teachings of Islam so others are impressed by our conduct. Kids talked about several conversations they have had in school and we discussed how to respond in such circumstances.

Would encourage parents to read the text in the folder with their kids, as we could not go through it in detail due to the active dialog and discussion in the class

Islamic Studies (Hamid Sheikh)

Upon asking, many students said they don’t know Tashahud in Arabic, and some don’t know Durud. Parents please take note that we cannot do memorization in class. We can only repeat a few times / check progress but main responsibility for memorization homework is with parents.

Contemporary Studies (Jari Khan)

In my period, we continue explore how to represent Islam,

We started off by exploring who is true representative by a drawing on the board one side was rights of God that we have to fulfill and other side was rights of fellow human beings. At the end of this we all agreed that we have to do both sides to become a true representative of Islam and both are connected.

Next we went over 3 points again per text, including love of the country and respect for other religion. We also understood that respecting other religion include maintaining our identity as a Muslim, not just mingling with them. Being friends with our colleagues and friends does not mean we have to follow them in matter of faith.

We also covered the new true Islam brochure. I would love if all the students memorize 11 points.

I request parents to encourage children to participate in my class. I encourage all students to pitch in the discussion. I do not allow raising hands rather start from right side and go around the whole class and start over and over again, so that each student participate.  Even if the answer is wrong there is no penalty because there is no right or wrong in learning process. Hope all students enjoy this mutual process of learning.

We continued the discussion of “Islamic terrorism” and the need to educate our friends on what actually Islam means and how the terrorists have no basis of using religion to air their grievances.
